How to Make Clover Protein Shake

  1. In a blender, combine all ingredients, except chocolate chips. Blend well until you obtain a creamy and smooth mixture.
  2. Then add the chocolate chips, only if using. You can top your smoothie with coconut whipped cream and a sprinkling of more chocolate chips. Enjoy it now and celebrate St. Patrick’s Day!

Ingredients and substitutions

To make this healthy clover smoothie, you will need:

  • Mint Chocolate Chip Ice Cream (keto or preferably high protein. Or replace with vanilla frozen yogurt)
  • Whey Protein Powder: This will make your drink thick and protein-rich (I used sugar-free, vanilla-flavored whey protein isolate powder, but you can use any vanilla-flavored kind, coconut or mint)
  • Unsweetened coconut milk: However, you can use any non-dairy milk you like.
  • Sweetener: Depends on what sugar substitute you like. I used raw stevia and a pinch of honey. If your ice cream is high in sugar, you may not need additional sweetener.
  • Fresh mint leaves, optional (will add some freshness but will have neither a vibrant green color nor a rich minty flavor. However, it is not a processed ingredient like extract)
  • Mint Extract: Even though I added fresh mint leaves, they won’t flavor the clover smoothie as much as the mint extract. But take it easy here! One or two drops are more than enough!
  • Avocado – you won’t taste it at all! It only serves to add additional creaminess to our protein shake. If you prefer, replace it with a banana. Fruit should preferably be frozen. But you can use fresh fruit and add ice cubes. For a vibrant green smoothie, add about ⅓ cup fresh spinach (you won’t taste it, I promise!), or green food coloring.
  • Dark chocolate chips, optional (use mini chocolate chips or cocoa nibs, or chop up regular sized ones to add crunch to your smoothie. You can add them to the blender or blend them after blending the clover protein shake. I prefer not to blend with the other ingredients because they can make your smoothie pale green, with a grayish hue.

  • Make sure you mix all the ingredients well. Start by adding the milk and then the solid ingredients so your blender doesn’t work harder than it needs to.
  • If a vibrant green color is a must for your smoothie, add spinach or food coloring to our recipe and leave out the chocolate chips.
  • If you don’t have frozen avocados or bananas, don’t worry! Use one of the fresh fruits to create creaminess and add some ice cubes to cool your protein shake.
  • If you use regular ice cream, don’t add extra sweetener.

Variations

  • Vegan: Use vegan ice cream, chocolate chips, and plant-based proteins like soy or pea protein powder to make your own vegan shamrock shake for St. Patrick’s Day.
  • Keto: Use keto ice cream, sugar-free protein powder, and keto sweetener. If you add fruit, use avocado, not banana.
  • Clean eating: Skip the food coloring and even the ice cream. Instead, use more fruit, add blanched spinach or kale, peppermint oil in place of extract, and a plant-based protein powder.
