Fruit custard is versatile and you can easily make it at home, just like an instant pudding or, to put it simply, a fruit salad with custard. All you need is your favorite fruit selection.
ingredients
Here are the fruits I used in this version of fruit custard. Of course you can use your favorites.
- Milk – I used whole cow’s milk.
- Custard powder – I always choose eggless and vanilla flavoured.
- Sugar – To sweeten custard.
- Apple – This is a must in my opinion. Vanilla flavor + apple = happiness!
- Pineapple – I love the flavour, after apple this is my favourite.
- Grape – Add a good pop of color and texture.
- Banana – I like adding it because it blends well with the creamy texture.
- Pomegranate – Rubies like arils are beauty, a delight for the eyes!

Substitutions and variations
- Custard powder – Add 2 tablespoons of corn flour (corn starch), a little yellow food coloring and vanilla essence (¼ teaspoon) or natural vanilla extract (1 teaspoon). Instead of vanilla flavoring, you can use any type of
- Vegan – You can use any vegan milk, I haven’t tried but I’ve seen in other blogs. So it’s possible.
- Fruit – You can make custard with just any type of fruit or even fruit jelly.
- Add some caramel sauce to make it more tempting!
Warehousing
Store the custard and fruit separately to prevent the fruit from reacting with the milk. It makes the custard bitter. Especially with citrus fruits.
You can store it for a couple of days this way, then it becomes watery.
The best advice
- Use seasonal fruit and fresh fruit. Do not store cut fruit for more than a day because it loses texture and flavor.
- To make it richer you can garnish it with whipped cream during serving.
- Adjust the sugar to your preference. But the more sugar you add, the more it will affect the consistency of the custard.
- Avoid melons as they are not a good addition to fruit custard.
FAQ
Ideally you should have the consistency of a pudding. If it is watery, the proportion of custard powder you are using is lower. Add more custard powder.
If you mix citrus-based fruits with milk-based custard, there is a high chance that the fruit acid will react with the milk and make it bitter. So it’s always best to mix when serving.
