Ingredients for blueberry brownies

To make these fudgy brownies you will need the following ingredients:

  • Butter – I use unsalted butter in these brownies; However, salted butter is also fine. Simply omit the salt below.
  • Semi-sweet chocolate – Use good quality semi-sweet chocolate. You can use chips or chunks. I used the dough in small pieces and spread the chips over the entire surface.
  • Granulated white sugar – For a richer flavor, use brown sugar or a combination of 1/2 cup granulated sugar and 1/2 cup brown sugar.
  • Egg – Large eggs produce the best results.
  • Vanilla extract – For depth of flavor.
  • All purpose flour
  • Cocoa powder – Use good quality unsweetened cocoa powder.
  • Salt – The amount of salt added can be increased or decreased according to your personal preferences.
  • Blueberries – I use fresh blueberries, but frozen ones are also fine. See notes below!

How to make homemade blueberry brownies

  1. First, heat the oven to 180°C. Line a 9-inch square baking pan with parchment paper. Set aside.
  2. Next, add the chopped butter and chocolate pieces to a large bowl. Place them in the microwave a little at a time (about 30 seconds), stirring well in the meantime, until the butter and chocolate have just melted. Alternatively you can melt the chocolate in a bain-marie.
  3. Add the granulated sugar, eggs and vanilla extract to the melted chocolate mixture. Beat until well combined.
  4. Now add the dry ingredients (flour, cocoa powder, and salt) to the wet ingredients and beat the flour mixture until smooth. Fold in 3/4 cup chocolate chips and 1 cup blueberries.
  5. Pour the batter into the prepared pan. Cover evenly with the remaining chocolate chips and blueberries.
  6. Bake the brownies for 35 minutes, or until the sides are firm and the center is almost firm but still slightly soft. However, make sure it passes the toothpick test to check for doneness.
  7. Allow the brownie to cool completely in the pan before removing and slicing. TIP: To get really nice slices for the brownies, I like to use a plastic knife!

Notes on the recipe

  • Beating the brownie batter well after adding the sugar and eggs will help give the brownie that slightly shiny, crackly surface when baked. For brownies I prefer not to use an electric mixer so as not to mix the mixture too much.
  • The extra chocolate chips and blueberries added to the top of the brownie are completely optional and can be omitted if preferred. Other serving options include dusting them with powdered sugar after they’re baked or serving them with a scoop of vanilla ice cream!
  • If you prefer, you can replace the milk or dark chocolate with semi-sweet chocolate. You could also use white chocolate chips!
  • The dough should be mixed only when no white marks of flour remain.
  • For a softer brownie, reduce the baking time slightly. For a firmer brownie, increase the cooking time slightly.
