We’re heading straight into gift-giving season, and if you’re looking for an easy and cozy homemade gift to share with friends and family, I have a liiilittle I have something in store for you. Enter, homemade bath salt. I LOVE (!) a nice bath in the winter, and nothing makes it more special than adding some scented bath salts to get you into cozy mode. They are great to make because you can completely customize the scent essential oilsadd some dried flowers for extra scents and a pop of color and incorporate any extra fun cosmetics, like Green clay OR jojoba oil be imaginative. Plus, it’s SO MUCH FUN!!! I don’t know what it’s like to mix salts and fragrances together and create little tinctures of essential oils, but it makes me feel like an old-time pharmacist and I’m 1000% here for it.
It is worth noting, however, that the source of the ingredients is super important. Since you’re applying it to your skin or giving it to someone else to wear, you don’t want to use anything that might cause a reaction. This is especially true with dried flowers, which can be treated with chemical preservatives if they don’t come from a reputable source. I use + HIGHLY recommended Mountain rose herbs, they are a local Oregon company but ship almost anywhere. I purchased all the dried flowers for cosmetic use, including the rose petals, lavender, helichrysum, ElderflowerAND chamomileas well as the French green clay (which is also great for homemade face masks), Jojoba oil, glass pantry jarsand the epsom salt same from them. The salt comes in a heavy 1 or 5 pound bag, so you can make a large batch of homemade bath salt to last a while!
It’s also good to know that some citrus essential oils can react negatively with direct exposure to sunlight and cause chemical burns if applied directly to the skin. Typically, in the recipes I share below that call for citrus (namely grapefruit, bergamot, and sweet orange essential oils), this is 10 drops of grapefruit essential oil in 4 cups of salt for a large amount of bath salt homemade, for example. AND Then if you put a few tablespoons of that bath salt in the bathtub, it gets diluted even further until it reaches the water of an entire bathtub, so the chances of this happening are quite small since the oil is sooooo diluted at that point. We also generally bathe less in sunny places/seasons. But it’s still worth mentioning just in case! Common sense and all. So, if you live in a sunny place, don’t rub pure grapefruit essential oil directly into your skin (even though it smells very nice and is very tempting!)
Below I have a general basic recipe for customizable homemade bath salt, and then some more specific recipes for scent blends as a starting point. But feel free to get creative and make it your own! Play with the essential oil smells you like to create a special mix just for you, or, if you’re making a batch for gifts, try to find out what smells your recipients like. Do they hate/love flowers, do they prefer woody or earthy smells? And if you want to keep things simple, you can just use a premixed essential oil instead of mixing your own scent blend. It just depends on how witchy you want to act. And if you really want to start a homemade beauty routine, I have an old but delicious DIY recipe for a homemade face cream that has also been a big hit.
I hope you enjoy this fun and scented Christmas craft and that it keeps you and the ones you love warm, cozy and relaxed this winter season! 🙂

Next add any cosmetic powders, such as French green clay or cocoa powder, and mix. And finally, sprinkle those delicious dried flowers (if using any) and stir until they’re distributed throughout the salt. Transfer to airtight containers (these glass pantry jars work great! https://mountainroseherbs.com/pantry-jars) and store out of direct sunlight.
To use, add 2 tablespoons to 1/3 cup of bath salts to a nice cozy bath. Relax and enjoy!
