This fresh Italian Fruit salad can be made with your favorite variety of fresh fruit. A refreshing fruit bowl perfect for breakfast, brunch or even dessert. Make it even more delicious with a scoop of ice cream.
I knew, with all the fresh fruit trees that abound in Italy, that my mother-in-law probably had a fresh fruit salad ready to serve at any moment. Maria was a wizard in the kitchen, from cod fritters to the many delicious first courses.
My husband loves macedonia or macedonia as it is called in Italy. It seems that the name derives from the French word “Macédoine” which means mixture of different ingredients.
Honestly, this fruit salad is based on the best fruit salad I’ve ever had. I had the opportunity to taste it while we were in Frosinone visiting relatives. I needed to know what was in that salad! Then Zia told me that she added a jar of her Frozen Strawberries (thawed) and a couple of spoonfuls of her homemade Limoncello.
Recipe ingredients
- Fresh fruit including bananas, apples, pears, strawberries, peaches, kiwis
- If desired, pineapple pieces in their own juice
- Lemon juice
- limoncello
How to prepare a fruit salad
I don’t know about you but there really is nothing like a fresh fruit salad in the warm months, the perfect and delicious way to fill up and refresh! Full instructions and ingredients are in the recipe card at the bottom of the post.
In a large bowl, first add the banana, apple and pear cut into pieces, season with lemon juice. Add the remaining fruit cut into pieces, the frozen or fresh sliced strawberries, stir in the limoncello. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap or place in an airtight container and refrigerate before serving.
Variations
I also like to include or replace with apricots, cantaloupe, figs, guavas, grapes, honeydew, mango, nectarines, papaya, peaches, persimmons and even plums for a delicious addition.
I like to use fresh seasonal fruit, sometimes I add a can of pineapples with their juice, this will make a nice addition, especially if you need a bit of extra juice.
Into this fresh fruit salad I added a chopped banana, peaches, a pear, a kiwi, an apple and of course a jar of my frozen strawberries that I saved from last year’s harvest.
The frozen strawberries mixed with the juicy ripe fruit gave me enough juice, especially when I added a couple of tablespoons of limoncello. You can leave it out if you want.
Recipe tip
If you use apples, pears, bananas, or even avocados in your fruit salad, you’ll want to prevent them from turning brown after you cut them. Be sure to season the fruit with the juice of half a lemon.
I like to prepare the fruit salad a few hours or even the evening before and let it rest covered in the fridge, so the flavors blend together.
How to store fruit salad
Fruit salad should be refrigerated in an airtight container. It will last about 3-4 days in the refrigerator.

- For a special dessert, cover a slice of cake with a spoonful of whipped cream.
