The best chicken plantain soup recipe and it’s perfect when you’re feeling sick.
It’s soup time and I want to share one of my favorites, Chicken and green banana soup (Chicken and green plantain soup). It tastes delicious, is well balanced, comforting and warming. I find the flavors to be perfect for this time of year.
Ajiaco is my favorite chicken soup and I can eat it every day, but I love trying new soup recipes during the cold months. This soup is very simple to prepare and substantial.
I first made this soup a couple of years ago when I was craving a Colombian chicken soup called chicken sancocho. I didn’t have all the ingredients needed to prepare it at home chicken sancochoso I did this Chicken and green banana soup Instead. While the soup alone is more than enough to satisfy my hunger, I usually serve it with avocado on the side.
Ingredients you will need

Chicken: You can use breast or a blend of your favorite chicken pieces. I like to use bone in chicken for extra flavor.
Chicken broth: You can also use chicken broth.
Spices: Cumin, color, salt and pepper.
Vegetables: Garlic cloves, onion, shallots, corn and plantains.
Herbs: Fresh coriander or parsley.
If you are looking for a substantial and simple soup, which can be prepared in advance and reheated just before serving, this is for you.
I like to serve this soup with avocado and lime wedges on the side. For a complete meal you can serve it with a light green salad.
How to make chicken and plantain soup
- Place the chicken in a large pot with the cumin, salt, pepper and water. Place the garlic, onion and shallots in a blender with ¼ cup water and blend. Add this mixture to the pot.
- Bring to the boil, reduce the heat and simmer for about 30 minutes.
- Add half the cilantro, corn and plantains. Season with salt and pepper and cook for about 30 minutes longer or until the plantains are tender.
- Remove the chicken from the pan, debone it, break the meat into bite-sized pieces and return the meat to the soup. Sprinkle with chopped coriander and serve hot.

- 2 large chicken breasts bone inside
- 12 cups chicken broth or stock
- 1 teaspoon cumin powder
- 4 garlic cloves
- 1 cup of onion cut into cubes
- 6 shallot chopped
- ½ cup of fresh chopped coriander
- 1 cup of corn kernels frozen or fresh
- 2 green plane trees peeled and cut into pieces
- Salt and pepper to taste
