Best new pizzeria: Pizza Mammoth Oxford

The proliferation of Neapolitan-style pizzerias in the city astounds even this former New Yorker who grew up in Little Italy. So it’s sink or swim in the local pie scene. One of the best, Alphi, sank. So we are delighted that Mammut, located in a quiet side street in the Zona Rosa, has opened its doors. The cozy space is a nice place to relax and enjoy a spritz, the house libation. The pizzas are high quality: the dough fermented for 48 hours is cooked with that perfect soft and crackling balance, with top-notch ingredients. The classic Margherita, always the test of every pizzeria, arrives with a burrata in the middle, excessive perhaps, but still fun.
The Salchicha Diavola is a rewarding spicy pork feast, while the Bianca San Danielle will satisfy seasoned connoisseurs of fine white with its creamy “Alfredo” sauce, ham and pistachio.

Oxford 21, Juarez

Honorable Mention: Pizzeria della Madonna, whose enormous oven greets you like Vesuvius, is chef Marco Carboni’s (of Sartoria) nod to the southern Italian trattoria. Orizaba 37, Rome Nte.
