City Stories: Restaurante Don Lázaro El Viajero at 80

Chicken soupthe house specialty, it’s rich and chickeny like your grandmother would have made it: for an extra rich touch, ask for it egg cup (unhatched eggs). The mole is of the aromatic chocolate variety and not too sweet. stuffed chili peppers they’re fresh, their egg batter fried to perfection and served with heartwarming slices of fried plantains. The classic Tampiqueña dish, a steak framed by guacamole, beans, onions, quesadilla and rice, hits the mark.

As Fiesta Patria season approaches, a spectacular chile en nogada is on the menu. And for dessert, the corn cakea corn pudding served in a puddle of rich eggnog-like rompope is worth the calories. Restaurante el Viajero retains a pleasant, old-fashioned homey atmosphere and is worth the short walk from the center of Santa Maria (see post). And be sure to check the tiles, who knows, you might learn something.
