Fried Potato Recipe

Fried potatoes, consisting of potato sticks fried in oil, are loved around the world and immensely popular in Japan. They are served not only in fast-food restaurants but also in Western-style restaurants and even convenience stores. Although in many countries they are commonly served as a meal component, in Japan they are still widely considered a snack or junk food. Nonetheless, hot french fries are truly delicious and appeal to many young and old as a guilty pleasure.

In Japanese we call this dish “fried potatoes” or “fried potatoes”, but its name varies from country to country. In the United States they are known as French fries; Across the pond in the UK they are called “chips”. Meanwhile, in Belgium they are known as “friets” or “frietjes”, and in France as “pommes frites” or simply “frites”. Despite their different names, they all have one thing in common: simply irresistible fried potatoes.

The origin of this beloved dish dates back to Belgium in the late 17th century. Although they are commonly called “fries” in the United States, there is a theory that suggests its origins may lie in France. Currently, however, the prevailing belief is that Belgium is the birthplace of this delight.

French fries became popular in Japan in the 1970s, when an American hamburger fast food chain began to spread across the country, and has since become deeply ingrained in Japanese food culture. Due to the easy accessibility of the dish in many stores, people often choose not to prepare them at home, but when they do they tend to prepare a simple but healthy version of fried potatoes in their own kitchens. French fries are often enjoyed as a treat, but are sometimes served as a side to Western-style entrees such as hamburger steak and beef steak. A portion of fried potatoes in Japan is typically not large and usually consists of a few pieces. Thicker stick potatoes are more common in home preparations. With a little preparation and care, you can get crispy, golden treats right in your kitchen.

These delicious fried potatoes have captured the hearts and taste buds of people in Japan and around the world. Whether enjoyed as a side dish, snack or part of a main course, freshly made french fries will be enjoyed by everyone around you. I hope you give it a try!

  • Peel and cut potatoes into 1/2-inch-thick sticks. Leave them to soak in water for 1 hour.

  • Dry with a towel or paper towel to remove excess moisture. Lightly coat the potatoes with flour.

  • Add the potatoes to the frying oil while it is still cold. Cook over medium-low heat for 3 minutes without touching. When the surface of the potatoes becomes hard, mix them. Cook for another 3 minutes. Raise the heat to high and cook for 2-3 minutes until golden brown.
