Everything Bagel Seasoning

This homemade Everything Bagel Seasoning brings bold, savory flavors right to your garden or kitchen. The best part is that you make it with ingredients you probably already have in your pantry. A combination of sesame and poppy seeds, dried garlic and onion, and flaked kosher salt gives a touch of black pepper. While bagel may be in the name, this versatile blend adds a delicious twist and satisfying texture to almost anything. It works on everything from smoked salmon to grilled vegetables. If you want to turn your meal prep or weekend brunch into something special, this Everything Bagel Seasoning delivers.

Ingredients for this recipe

This everything bagel seasoning uses just six simple ingredients, but each packs a vital punch of flavor. Here’s what you need:

  • Kosher salt: I put a little salt in almost everything I make. When it comes to creating seasoning blends, kosher salt is my favorite. The large flakes enhance the flavor of everything they touch and lay the foundation for the crunchy texture of this blend.
  • Dry minced garlic: Those unmistakable savory notes that bagels are famous for are thanks to garlic. This ingredient adds a rich depth of flavor to the mix and smells intoxicating when you cook it.
  • Chopped dried onion: Get all the sweet, oniony goodness you crave without the tears with this simple ingredient. Dried onion has a crunchy flavor, so it adds to the overall crunchy texture of your dressing. If you prefer you can use freeze-dried onions. You’ll just lose some of that great texture.
  • Poppy seeds: These little black seeds may not look like much, but they bring a nutty, earthy flavor to complement your blend. And when it comes to that rough texture you’re after, these guys do a lot of the heavy lifting.
  • Sesame seeds: These flavorful seeds add subtle, toasted notes and (you guessed it) really help enhance the texture of your dressing. If you really want to get into your seasoning bag, you can use white sesame seeds and black sesame seeds. You can also use the standard, pre-mixed kind. This is what I used and it works great.
  • Coarsely ground black pepper: Now, black pepper is not a traditional ingredient, so you won’t find it in some recipes. You can omit it if you want, but it adds a touch of warmth and warmth that I love in this blend.

How to make everything bagel seasoning

The name may sound intimidating, but this everything bagel seasoning couldn’t be easier to create at home. Once you’ve gathered your ingredients, follow these simple steps for a flavorful dressing in minutes:

  1. Make all the bagel seasoning. Add each ingredient to a small bowl, then stir to combine. The key to successful seasoning is a nice, even blend. To ensure each bite gets a little of everything, use a fork or whisk to break up any lumps.
  2. Use or store. Your seasoning is ready to use right away, so you can whip it up when you’re ready to make some bagels or fire up the smoker. Any unused seasoning will last up to 6 months stored in the pantry.

Ways to Use Everything Bagel Seasoning

Again, don’t let the name fool you. It’s called Everything Bagel Seasoning. Some might say that means it’s for bagels. Personally I think it’s great on everything. Around here, we love to sprinkle a little of this stuff on top whenever we make sliders (like these Smoked Turkey Sliders). I also have a salmon appetizer with this dressing and it makes a great alternative to a bagel. And yes, it’s still absolutely delicious on bagels with a little cream cheese and smoked salmon. It does so much more, though, so don’t be afraid to think outside the box.

Storage and shelf life

If you want to make your bagel seasoning all ahead of time to have it ready, or have some to save, that’s no problem. You can store the seasoning in an airtight container or glass spice jar to keep in the pantry or spice rack. It will remain maintaining maximum freshness and flavor for up to 6 months. If you still have some at that point, it might be time to make another one.
