Bean or no bean?

When it comes to chili peppers, this is the question! This simple recipe uses a can of chili with beans partly because I find it to be more filling, but you could definitely use a can of chili without beans if you prefer.

I like beans because they add flavor and texture, and the beans provide some nutrients like fiber that make this dish a little more substantial. They also help stretch a plate to feed more people.

Ingredients for 3-Ingredient Chili Cheese Sauce

When I say “3 ingredients” I mean exactly that. For this chili cheese dip, you only need

  • Cream cheese (room temperature)
  • Grated Mexican mixed cheese
  • Canned chili with beans (I used Hormel brand)

That’s all! Of course, if you want to add other ingredients to spice up the flavor or appearance, you can, but this delicious sauce really doesn’t need them!

Check the recipe card at the bottom of the post for the exact quantities needed for each ingredient.

How to Make Chili Cream Cheese Sauce

  1. First you need to preheat the oven to 180°C. Next, spray 1 1/2 qt. baking sheet with cooking spray. You could also use a large pie plate.
  2. Now spread the softened cream cheese all over the bottom of the plate, then cover the cream cheese layer with 1/2 cup Mexican cheese.
  3. Pour over the can of Hormel chili and use a rubber spatula or the back of a large spoon to spread it to the edges. Finally, sprinkle the remaining Mexican cheese on top.
  4. Cook the chili sauce for 20-25 minutes or until the cheese is completely melted. Serve hot with your favorite dippers!

Recipe variations

  • Do you have your own homemade chili? Use it instead of the canned stuff!
  • Instead of having distinct layers, you can mix the chili and cream cheese together until well combined, then add shredded cheese or sprinkle it on top.
  • Garnish the top with diced green onions or cilantro.
  • Use shredded cheddar cheese, pepper jack cheese, or colby jack cheese instead
  • Add some chopped onion or diced jalapeno for extra flavor.
  • Keep this homemade chili cheese sauce warm by transferring it to a crock pot or using a warming plate under the baking dish.
