Tips for cooking with pumpkin
Some additional tips for turning pumpkin into the best autumn delicacies:
- You can use the canned one or the homemade one – sort of. Most pumpkin recipes will turn out just as great with fresh, made-from-scratch pumpkin puree as they will with canned pumpkin. However, the flavor and texture of fresh squash can vary, so that’s something to keep in mind when cooking. Pumpkin pies, for example, usually turn out better when made with trusty canned pumpkin.
- Speaking of canned pumpkin… Canned pumpkin puree is not the same as canned pumpkin pie filling. If your recipe calls for canned pumpkin, make sure you use the right ingredient!
- Swap squash for eggs, oil or butter: You can swap 1/4 cup of pumpkin puree for an egg in most baking recipes. You can also substitute one tablespoon of pumpkin puree in place of the oil/butter.
- Cook thoroughly. Because squash is so moist, it’s important to keep an eye on your baked goods while they’re in the oven and after they come out. Make sure the centers are not still raw/rubbery after cooking.
- Pumpkin Puree Substitutes: Have you run out of pumpkin puree? Or maybe you forgot to add it to your shopping list or are just looking for something different. Good alternatives to pumpkin include mashed or pureed sweet potatoes, canned sweet potatoes, or pumpkin. These can be substituted 1:1 for pumpkin puree in most recipes!
