Today we are doing Hot Dog Bread – a variation of the Vietnamese Bánh Mì sandwich, which usually includes marinated grilled pork (or other proteins) with pickled vegetables and herbs on French bread. We’ll use all of these toppings, plus some spicy mayo and pickles, on a regular hot dog and a hot dog bun, for an easy and delicious dinner to make. less than 15 minutes!

A Bánh Mì is without a doubt one of my favorite sandwiches. Maybe even my best sandwich ever (a bold statement!). And while I go to do a Authentic bread To take with you anytime, the hot dog version is a quick and easy way to scratch that itch at home and a super fun way to elevate a U.S. favorite: the humble hot dog!

Since we’re using a hot dog as the protein instead of the super flavorful marinated meat that usually goes in a Bánh Mì sandwich, we’ll boost the flavor another way. For this reason I like to use a homemade spicy mayo to spread on these.

Without further ado, let’s make some Bánh Mì hot dogs, shall we? And if you like them, be sure to check out this other variation: Bánh Mì Chicken Tacos!

Ingredients and substitutions

  • Hot dogs – feel free to use whatever type you want in these Bánh Mì hot dogs: pork, beef, turkey, or even vegetarian.
  • Hot dog buns
  • Carrots – or a combination of carrots and daikon radish, which is more traditional, but harder to find in conventional grocery stores (more on that later).
  • Rice vinegar, sugar and salt – to quickly marinate carrots
  • Mint, coriander and basil – these fresh herbs are extremely important for flavor. Use Thai basil if you can get it!
  • Spicy mayonnaise – I’ll explain how to make my homemade spicy mayo for this, but you can use a store-bought version or just mayo for a mild version if you like.
  • Cucumber – you can leave it out if you want, but it adds a fresh touch to the whole thing!

How to prepare hot dogs

I love how incredibly easy it is to make these Bánh Mì hot dogs. You only need to prepare two things: pickled carrots and hot dogs.

For pickled carrots, just mix a little rice vinegar, sugar and salt until everything is dissolved. Then add the carrots (julienned or grated) and leave them there while you prepare everything else. You can cook the hot dogs however you like – grilled would probably be tastier, but I usually cook them in butter in a skillet for speed and ease. Then, prepare all the other ingredients for assembly!

On each hot dog, add a little spicy mayo and a generous portion of fresh herb leaves (again, these are ESSENTIAL)pickled carrots, sliced cucumbers, and of course, the hot dog itself.

Here you go! Dinner in record time.

How to make homemade spicy mayonnaise (and alternatives)

I’m so in love with this homemade mayonnaise that I wrote a whole separate post on how to make spicy mayo, not just for Bánh Mì hot dogs, but also as a spread for sandwiches, a dip for sushi, a dip for vegetables, etc.

It’s a mixture of mayonnaise, chili garlic sauce, toasted sesame oil, lime juice and zest, and soy sauce.

For a simpler version, you can simply mix together some mayo and sriracha or chili sauce! Or you can also buy store-bought spicy mayonnaise.

And if you’re not a fan of spicy, feel free to use plain mayo for these Bánh Mì hot dogs, or even make your own cream sauce.

Read more about pickled vegetables on Bánh Mì

The pickled vegetables for a Bánh Mì sandwich are traditionally a combination of carrots and daikon radish. Here’s a great recipe on how to make them Sandwich with pickled vegetables loose, with both vegetables.

I only opted for carrots here, just because they are more accessible in conventional grocery stories in the US. Feel free to add radish if you like, or even other types of radishes or other vegetables like parsnips!

Additionally, vegetables are usually cut into julienne strips. I made this by hand, but you can also use the attachment of a food processor. But grating carrots will work great here too: they’ll be a little softer and less crunchy, but with a more potent pickled flavor.
