Cheese and guava – The classic Brazilian combination of guava and cheese

Hey guys!

Guava and cheese, or guava with cheese as we say in Portuguese, it’s so simple, yet so perfect.

Known as Cheese and guava in Brazil, this pairing draws inspiration from Shakespeare’s famous lovers Romeo and Juliet, symbolizing a perfect but contrasting union of flavors: sweet and salty, floral and spicy.

This classic combination has always been the appetizer, snack or dessert par excellence when there is “nothing” to eat at home.

When I was little, guava paste (Guava paste) was a refrigerator staple in most Brazilian homes, both humble and fancy, because it is cheap, delicious, and virtually indestructible. I’ve never seen it Guava paste you’re going badly! And thanks to its long shelf life, it is quite easy to find globally.

Good for us!

Quick, effortless and always satisfying.

But it’s not just Brazil that loves the cheese-dessert combination: think of parmesan with honey, brie with jam… it’s the same concept, tropicalized with guava in Brazil. And also in many other Latin American countries, known as guava and cheese!

Ingredients:

  • Guava paste (guava paste) — you’ll find it in some American supermarkets in the Latin aisle, also called Sweet guava. Additionally, you should be able to find it at a Brazilian or Latin market near you or online. In Brazil we love firm slices, but any style works. If guava paste is not available, a good quality guava jam is a delicious alternative.
  • Cheese — traditionally Brazilians use delicate cheeses such as Minas Frescal Cheesewhich is a fresh soft cheese with a slightly spicy and creamy flavour. Unfortunately, as far as I know, it is impossible to find it abroad. So, you can look for alternatives that are a mild, milky cheese with a soft yet sliceable texture. The ones I always use are fresh cheese, white cheese (white cheese) or panela cheesewhich you can find in most American grocery stores. Fresh mozzarella and salted ricotta might also work. However, it won’t be the closest to perfect replacement, but they will be fun.
  • Optional seals — Fresh mint or basil adds nice color and pop.

How to prepare the classic Romeu and Julieta (Brazilian cheese and guava)

Sliced: Cut the guava paste and cheese into equal-sized slices and place on a plate, alternating cheese and guava to create a striped pattern.

Optional heat: To make it gooey, place the guava layers on a small baking sheet or baking dish and bake at 180°C (350°F) for 5–7 minutes or until hot and slightly melted. It might be best to do this on a piece of baking paper so it’s easier to plate and serve.

Cubed: Cut the guava paste and cheese into equal-sized cubes. Aim for about 1-inch squares if serving as finger food. Feeling elegant? Skewer them and garnish with a little basil or a mint leaf for perfect party morsels.

How to store:

Store guava paste and cheese separately in airtight containers in the refrigerator.

Leftover guavas will last a long time refrigerated, probably months! To last this long, it’s best to also wrap it in food-grade plastic and then store it in an airtight container.

Of course, do your due diligence to check before tasting again to make sure it’s safe to eat – some brands may be manufactured differently and will therefore have a different shelf life.
